Text: | Finite Mathematics, Eleventh Ed., by Margaret L. Lial, Raymond N. Greenwell, and Nathan P. Ritchey, Addison-Wesley.
Prerequisite: | Appropriate score on the Mathematics Placement Test or placement by the department.
Topics: |
Test Dates: |
No Makeups: | There will be NO make-up tests or assignments. If you miss a test because of an emergency and provide valid documentation, your score for the test missed will be based on your final exam score. For your assignments, I will excuse assignments that were due while you were sick (need a doctor's note to verify).
Attendance: | Required, either in person, or by synchronous participation via Zoom. Before October 1, all classes will be online. It is your right to attend on-line if you want to be cautious, it is your duty if you feel sick! Recall that wearing a CDC-compliant face covering is mandatory in classrooms and labs. You are only allowed to attend in person on the days the Office of the Registrar assigned you to do so. This is to help contract tracing and I have no authority to change your subsection assignment. The current expectation is that all tests and the final exam will be on campus. Zoom sessions will be recorded and you will have to have your video on. You will be counted absent if you miss 15 minutes or more of a lecture. There is no penalty for just a few absences. However, having 8 or more absences results in an automatic course grade of F! Even excusable absences are counted toward the maximum of 7 allowed absences. This is a synchronous hybrid class. Zoom recordings and scanned lecture notes will be posted as a courtesy, subject to no unexpected technical problems. |
Homework: | Some, perhaps all of the homework will be assigned using the Webwork system. The webwork server is maintained by our University, its use is free of charge. Besides these assignments there may be exercises in our textbook that I assign you to turn in. These will be collected using Canvas. You will have to submit scanned PDF files, any other file format may be rejected. No late homework will be accepted. You are encouraged to do (or at least read) the unassigned exercises of the corresponding section as well.
Evaluation: | Grades will be based on: 15% for each of the three tests, 30% for the final exam, and 25% for the homework. Tentative grading scale: 90 - 100 % A, 75 - 89% B, 60 - 74% C, 50 - 59 % D, 0 - 49% F. (This scale is applicable only if you have 7 or less absences.) |
