Course Description

The purpose of Advanced Social Work Practice with Organizations is to introduce students to the purpose of social work practice in organizations, to theories of culturally sensitive and socially just practice within these contexts, and to advanced engagement and assessment skills within these contexts. The course requires students to make a conceptual shift from focusing on individuals and families as primary client systems to focusing on organizations as the primary client system.

Organizations are the context for social work practice. Social workers need to know how to strengthen, maintain, and when necessary, change the organizations within which they work so that the organization will be more effective and more responsive to diverse clients and employees. By working effectively with organizations, social workers can facilitate the well-being of individuals and families, positively impact the availability and effectiveness of services, and seek to achieve social and economic justice especially for historically oppressed and vulnerable persons.

As an advanced practice class, this course facilitates the development of advanced practice skills in engaging and assessing organizations from rights-based, anti-racist, and anti-oppressive perspectives.
